PSychotherapy
with Children

Along with focussing on the therapeutic relationship, psychotherapy with children is the exploration of creative materials, activities, and play with a warm belief in the absolute goodness of each person. I take into account various threads such as attachment, intergenerational trauma, neurobiology and psychologic understandings while also playing, creating and chatting. Through this work, each child has needs and challenges that we let emerge to get attention and sometimes clarity and healing.

Because young children rely so deeply on their relationships with their parents and caretakers, the sessions may include the parents/carers regularly or periodically, depending on the age of the child and other factors.

This is usually offered in person.

People

Pre-pubescence, adolescence and teenage-hood are transformative and often challenging times. Work with me can support young people with those challenges and within wider contexts of historic or current family conflict.

With exercises, cards, games, information, mindfulness activities, creative materials, and chat, we can explore each young person’s perspectives, experiences and outlooks. Often this validates the young person, uncovers their resources, and helps them make better sense of themselves and the world.

Because it's important to feel comfortable, and building trust can be particularly difficult in this hormonal and tumultuous time, we'll spend considerable time getting to know each other. Sessions can look more like counselling or life-coaching at different times, and depending on each young person's needs.

This is offered in person, online or a mixture.

Integrative
approach

In the case of integrative psychotherapy with children and young people, integration refers to wholeness. We can orient towards reintegration, even with underlying traumatic and damaging attachment experiences. It also refers to the integration of multiple approaches and ideologies of therapeutic practice into an evolving experience. This is put into practice with a broad range of exercises, material, practices, tools, techniques and listening.

I have experience working with young people on the autism spectrum (AS), and with attention defficit disorder (ADHD), pathalogical demand avoidance (PDA) and dyslexia which can sometimes be additionally helpful.

Focus can also be on helping parents and children in their relationship and family life. If you’re interested in this, we can discuss how, with your specific situation in mind, and whether that's in person, online, one-one or with family members together.
